Welcome to Behind the Hangers at Ablitt’s!

Welcome to Behind the Hangers at Ablitt’s!

Is drycleaning magic? Well, sort of. . .

Hanger recycle.

Many people think drycleaning is some magical process involving mysterious rays that somehow make your clothes clean.

And while I do think there’s a little magic in what we do, the truth is that a drycleaning machine is much more like your washing machine at home than most people realize.

There are 2 big differences:

  1. Drycleaning machines use a closed system that cleans, extracts, and dries garments within the same machine. Your clothes go in dry and come out dry.
  2. Instead of water, we use a specialized cleaning solvent that, believe it or not, looks a lot like water.

Years ago, I started this blog to share some of the things I’ve learned about clothing, fabrics, cleaning, and the drycleaning industry. Along the way, I’ve discovered that there’s a surprising amount of misinformation about how we care for our clothes — and plenty of interesting stories behind the scenes.

I’m bringing the blog back, this time right here on the Ablitt’s website.

I’ve been in this business for a long time, and you’d think by now I’d have seen just about everything. Not even close! There’s always something new to learn, and plenty of things about this industry that might surprise you. That’s what I want to share here.

I’ll be updating some of my original posts, and sharing my thoughts on everything from garment care and stain removal to recycling and sustainability, small business insights the human condition (after all, like most businesses drycleaning is all about the people; employees, customers and the community!), and the occasional mystery that finds its way into our cleaning plant!

Original Post from 2010:  Many people think that drycleaning is a magical process with magic rays that clean your clothes.  while I do think of it as magical, a naldrycleaning machine is more like a clothes washer than most people realize.  The Main differences are 1. it is a closed system meaning clothes go in dry and come out dry and 2. while there is no water used (hence the term dry in drycleaning) there is a fluid that looks a lot like water.
